Welcome to the Fort Greene Chapter NSDAR
Brooklyn, New York
Ann-Marie Cook
Regent, Fort Greene Chapter NSDAR Welcome to the Fort Greene Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR). Organized on December 3, 1896, as the sixth chapter in DAR history, we will celebrated our 120th anniversary in December 2016. The chapter is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, who oversaw the construction of the fort (then called Fort Putnam) in 1776. We currently have more than 50 members who are committed to working on the NSDAR mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We celebrate American history with activities dedicated to the largest POW war memorial in the nation. They include the Battle of 1812 Ceremony, the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument Ceremony at Fort Greene Park, and Battle of Brooklyn commemoration at Green-Wood Cemetery in August. We also honor our nation's history by participating in Constitution Week events in September, the Sons and Daughters Gala Ball in February, as well as Veterans Day, and Flag Day activities. Mrs. Stephen V. White, organizing regent, was largely responsible for raising the necessary funds from Congress, state and local resources to build the Prison Ships Martyrs' Monument. The Fort Greene Chapter NSDAR was instrumental in this effort, the primary reason for this chapter's formation. The site is the largest single Revolutionary War grave in the country, with over 11,500 war dead. Prospective members are invited to attend our meetings, which are typically held on the second Saturday of the month at 1:00 p.m. from October through May. We also have evening socials for our working members. To find out more about our chapter, please contact me. We look forward to hearing from you! Ann |
